Who We Are

Smithwood Baptist Church was founded in 1845 by a group of people who wanted others in this community to know Christ.  A lot has changed since then, but our purpose has remained the same.

We have a three-fold purpose which is rooted in the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The first and second parts of our purpose are drawn from the first and second great commands.  Jesus said, "'...You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment.  And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" (Matthew 22:37-38)  Therefore we are to love God, to adore Him and seek to live lives that honor Him.  We also are to love people, to live lives that are demonstrations of God's mercy and love for all people.

The third part of our purpose statement is rooted in the great commission.  Jesus gave this final charge to his followers, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20)  Therefore, we desire to make disciples.  We want others to place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ and to grow in their walk with Him.

This three-fold purpose drives all that we do.  It is our prayer that as a people who have been changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ we will continue to impact this community for many years to come.
